I will be traveling with my husband and 11 and 14 year old sons. I have a few questions:
1. Are the beaches generally safe for snorkeling or do I really have to worry about the boys swimming around? I’ve been reading online about the dangers of Hawaii waters!
2. Are there resorts on the beaches with places to snorkel out front, or do you always have to drive or take a boat to good safe snorkeling?
3. What is the weather like in April? What is the water like in April (visibility, calmness, etc.)?
4. Is there a better time of year to go?
Thanks.

i went to maui in the summer and it was awesome. there were so many rainbows and things and the beach was very safe and no giant waves for the boys or anybody to get swept away in. as far as for surfing, the waves **** but yeah it might be a little wet in April since its spring and all but just have fun you can’t worry too much about these things! ~~Aloha JLB~~
I took my 2 teens and 1 almost teen, (ages at the time were, 11,13 and 16), last Summer for 3 weeks to Oahu and Maui.
1.Most beaches on Maui are safe, but as you know any body of water has a potential for danger…there is nothing like a parents watchful eye.My 13 year old son made friends with a group of Local Boys who took him Spear-Fishing,Cliff Diving and Snorkeling…Black Rock is a Great area for Snorkeling and Diving,it is relatively safe with alot of beautiful Marine Life you all will enjoy.
2.Black Rock is located right by the Sheraton Maui and that is a favorite place of alot of people…even the locals go there. If you want a deeper water snorkel,Snuba or Scuba experience then I suggest Molokini Crater..great place to dive. There are Charters that go out daily…my kids love it here.
3.The weather in April is beautiful as it is pretty much throughout the year…waters are calm as is the weather…you will get your typical Tropical Showers but that is Hawai’i…
4.”Is there a better time to go”? No,not really…April is good…we have been at all different times of the year and have always been happy with our experience regardless of the time of year…Of course during the Winter, Hawai’ian water and waves are more treacherous.
Aloha,Enjoy Maui..E Komo Mai!

Okay, I went when I was about 8 a couple years ago. Most likely you will walk from your hotel to the beach. Thebeaches are extremely safe if you find a section of a beach designed for safety. If you look at this picture, see where there are rocks around the water that look like a half circle? Predators such as sharks cant get in that section. Niether can Jelly Fish.
Up against those rocks is great for snorkeling. Maybe buy some salt water fish pellets to attract fish. The water isnt calm anytime of the year. It is always visable though. April is a perfect time to go…unless actually that is spring break? Other than that the only people at the beach are People who live there. I will warn you it rains EVERYDAY around 10 in the morning for a coulple minutes. It is not hard at all though
It actually may not rain in Mauai though…it does in Kauai.
I hope you have a safe and Fun trip!
