Where is the best place to live on the island of Oahu like a Hawaiian, away from the tourist stuff?

But the Hawaiian of old polynesia like to go to beaches to surf, drink, and party etc. If I was to live on Oahu for a year, tempoary job assignment, where can I experience a more polynesian type community/atmosphere? One place suggested to me was Kaneohe. Another is Makaha.
