Look For Wireless Servers For Increased Distance in Cable Communications

If you are shopping for a router bridge, a quick search will bring up a number of options. This can be overwhelming, especially if this is your first dual WAN router purchase and you are unsure of what you will need. If all you need is a dual WAN router, how do you sort through this long list of features and options to choose the right router that fits your needs and budget?

Let’s take a look at the Linksys Cisco RV082 8-port 10/100 VPN Router. It is of course a dual WAN router, which will provide a failsafe connection or connections to separate Internet service providers. The 8 LAN ports supports 8 wired connections to the router. It allows 50 QuickVPN users and up to 100 IPsec tunnel for remote access. There is also a provision for connecting multiple RV082-based networks together. It also will provide Point to Point tunneling for up to five users. Another benefit is that each of the LAN ports can have separate Quality of Service (QoS) configurations.

If we compare it to another cable modem router, the SMB Broadband Router TL-R4299G, we will find that many of the features are common in this type of unit. Both units provide 8 LAN ports with similar Mps throughput and specifications. Common features also include separate QoS configurations for each port and load balancing. The TL-R4299G also provides access control based on the time of day, a feature not listed for the RV082. These two routers are similar in features and price, so your comfort level with the companies (SMB and Cisco) and the configuration interface may be the determining factor between these two routers.

A cheaper option would be the Syswan Technologies Duolinks SW24. This has many of the same features as the other routers but is considerably less in price. It has features, like load balancing and high-speed LAN ports, and configurable QoS settings, just like the others. It only has 4 LAN ports in comparison to the 8 ports of the other dual WAN routers. This may be an issue if you currently need more than 4 ports or want additional expandability. Buying as router with too few ports can become a problem in the future. You may not ever need more than four ports so the additional ports and money will be wasted.

As you look for your router signal booster, take the time to look at the specifications carefully so you get the router that fits your needs the best.
